Dubai Metro Project

  • The project cost Dh28 billion or $7.6 billion, initially at Dh15.5 billion
  • Expected to carry 1.2 million passengers on average daily, 27,000 passengers per hour for each line, and 355 million passengers per year once both lines are fully operational
  • Planning started in May 2005 and Work officially commenced on March 21, 2006 and scheduled to be fully completed by 2012
  • To be operated by Serco under contract to the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority

Red Line

  • The Red line is 55.1 kilometres (33 mi) long
  • Consist of 29 stations, including 24 elevated, four underground and one at ground-level
  • Stretching from Jebel Ali Port, the American University in Dubai, through the city cenre to Al Rashidiya
  • First to open on 9th September 2009 (partially with only 10 stations)

Green Line

  • The Green line is20 kilometres (12 mi) long
  • Consist of 18 stations, including 12 elevated and 6 underground
  • Stretching from Festival City, through the city centre, Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 and the Airport Free Zone
  • Proposed to open in March 2010 (postponed to June 2010 due to extension of line) 

Metro Stations

  • There will be two transfer stations — Union Square and the BurJuman Centre where passengers will be able to change line
  • First 10 of the 47 total stations to open on September 9, 2009 includes Al Rashidiya, Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, Deira City Centre, Al Rigga, Union Square, Khalid Bin Al Waleed (BurJuman), Al Jafiliya, Financial Centre, Mall of the Emirates and Nakheel Harbour and Tower
  • Minimum price for naming a station starts from Dh6 million per year and Dh60 million for 10-years
  • Metro stations will be secured by 668 military personnel, 3,000 surveillance cameras, two police stations, eight security offices and police sniffer dogs

Trains

  • 44 trains will run (initially on opening day) at 10 minute intervals for a rate of six trains per hour
  • Manufactured by Japanese firm Kinki Sharyo, based in Osaka Japan
  • A total of 87 five-car trains for the Red and Green lines
  • Designed to carry 643 seated and standing passengers
  • Will have three classes of accommodation: Gold Class (VIP), Women and Children class, and regular Silver Class (economy)

Fare

  • Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will introduce Unified Automated Fare Collection system named as ‘Nol Cards’, to be used for all modes of public transport
  • A total of four types of Nol cards including the NOL Silver, NOL Blue, Nol Gold Card, and Nol Red Card Ticket
  • The minimum price of the Nol Silver Card Dh20 includes Dh14 balance for the fare and Dh6 cost of card, which will be valid for five years and can be topped up with up to Dh500
  • Minimum fare for a short trip up to three kilometers will be Dh1.8 (using prepaid cards) or Dh2 (using a standard single journey paper ticket)
  • Maximum fare for a single journey will be Dh6.5 in case of using a paper ticket and Dh5.8 in case of using the card
  • A passenger using a metro can continue his trip on buses at no extra cost

Parking

  • Car parking facility will be provided to metro users on the concept of “park and ride”
  • There will be two major parking lots on Red Line — one at Rashidiya Station for 3,000 cars and at Jumeirah Islands Station for another 3,000 cars
  • The biggest parking lot will be built at Al Qusais Station with a capacity of 6,000 cars
  • Small parking spaces was set up at each station while each station will be linked to other mode of transportation, including taxis, buses and at some stations water transport.
